Mainlanders
2026 | oil on canvas | 43×154×5.2cm (5× 40×30cm panels) | Blackwood timber frame
Sometimes ‘mainlander’ is a dirty word, as is ‘weed’.
As humans, we strive to find our place in the world. We search for family, purpose and home; for a place we can be our best and thrive.
From the dawn of time the search has lead us far and wide. Like the so called ‘weeds’ finding the space to put down roots and grow, season by season humanity in its exploration has become the ultimate invasive species.
Maybe instead… we’re all just wildflowers.
I’m a mainlander and I’ve found my place in Tasmania. All the flowers depicted have been collected from around my property and the surrounding Huon Valley. The curated composition utilises a polyptych that can start with any panel suggesting the eternal search and change of seasons. Wildflowers bring me joy when I find them, comfort when they return and a sense of kinship with their journey.
* each panel is signed on the back.
**this is currently on show at The Artisans Hand, Balfour House Cygnet
